Chances of surviving a cardiac arrest outside a hospital are almost twice as high if bystanders perform chest-compression only resuscitation instead of traditional CPR, according to research published in The Lancet.
The study analysed the outcomes of over 4,000 resuscitation attempts in Japan performed by laypeople at the scene after they witnessed a collapse. It is the first trial to compare survival rates of cardiac arrest patients with and without mouth-to-mouth ventilations as treated by bystanders.
